The Spastics Society of Tiruchirapalli is a registered organization providing rehabilitation services for children affected by Cerebral Palsy. The activities and programmes of this organization are oriented towards creating an Inclusive Society in which persons with disabilities can live with dignity, enjoying the equal rights as citizens of India.
BACKGROUND HISTORY
The United Nations declared the year 1981 as The International Year of the persons with disabilities. The advent of this particular year marks the beginning of a new chapter in the annals of the history of organizations for children with Cerebral Palsy in Tamil Nadu. It was only in this year, the Spastics Society of Tamilnadu was started in Chennai with branches in and around the city.
In the very next year, an initiative was taken by the District administration of Tiruchirapalli to start a similar organization in Trichy. Thanks to the initiative of the former Collector of Trichy, Ms.Santha Sheela Nair and a powerful drive by the able veteran in the field of rehabilitation for the disabled, Mr.P.G.Micheal, an organization exclusively for children with Cerebral Palsy could soon be a reality ! Accordingly, the Spastics Society of Tiruchirapalli was founded on 9th November 1982 with the specific objective of providing training, education and rehabilitation services to children affected by Cerebral Palsy. It was inaugurated by the former Governor of Tamilnadu, Dr. S.L. Khurana.
