CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
According to Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013 all Companies in India with a net worth of Rs. 500 crore or more, turnover of Rs. 1000 crore or more or net profit of Rs. 5 crore or more are required to spend 2% of their average profit of the previous three years on CSR activities every year. This is a mandatory provision . CSR funds can be tapped for four types of activities namely
- Environmental Sustainability
- Economic Responsibility
- Ethical Business Practices
- Philanthropic Giving
We, at the Spastics Society of Tiruchirapalli, would like to avail funds given for charitable institutions under the category of Philanthropic Giving. A total of 10 different programmes being run by this organization are listed below with a briefing and estimated budget cost.
I. Newborn Screening
Newborn screening is done for babies with high risk factors from the time of birth up to 4 weeks of postnatal period. The initial assessment that we do here fall under 3 categories such as
- Checking the APGAR Score
- Checking the Primitive Reflex
- Checking the Motor Milestones
Based on the assessment mentioned above, treatment plan is drafted which may involve imparting them with Sensory Stimulation Exercise and Motor Developmental Activities. Two staff members - one Physiotherapist and one Special Educator regularly visit Pediatric Department of Government Headquarters Hospital on a weekly basis to conduct newborn screening at the hospital itself. This will enable us to detect and identify disability at a very young age and provide them with appropriate treatment which will greatly reduce the impact of childhood disabilities drastically. A total of around 10 to 15 babies get screened every week.

In the Early Intervention Centre, children with CP below the age of 6 years are admitted. The Sensory Integration Therapy provides the much needed basic stimulation for these kids to develop in areas such as visual, auditory, tactile etc. This is a preparatory programme for the Day-Care Programme at the Spastics Society and also Inclusive Education in the regular Mainstream Schools. A total of around 50 children attend this programme.

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy play a major role in reducing the physical disabilities in children with CP thereby promoting correct body posture and better mobility. The use of orthotic appliances such as Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) help in correcting foot deformity & contracture, enabling equal weight bearing on foot & correct body posture thereby promoting better gait pattern & mobility. Most of the children with CP require therapeutic intervention and to supplement this, we supply on an average, 30 pairs of AFOs in a year.

We have been running Vocational Training Programmes to train young adults with disabilities to empower them in basic skill training. Persons with Disabilities are getting trained at Masala Unit, File Unit, Jute Product Unit, Doormat Unit. The total cost of running this whole programme is Rs. 3,40,000/- per year. The break up is given below.

Eating / Feeding is one of the areas in which children with CP are being trained as part of activities of daily living. Again, some of the children are from poor economic background, lacking in nutritious meal at home. This prompted us in starting Nutritious Meal Programme for the benefit of all the children in the afternoon at the centre. A total of around 120 children take mid-day meals at the centre for which the cost of expenditure per annum is Rs.2,64,000.
The Day Care Programme serves the need of children with disabilities who cannot be integrated and brought under Inclusive Education of regular mainstream educational system. For these children, the main focus is on making them as independent as possible particularly in the area of Activities of Daily Living. Apart from therapy, functional academics are also being taught.
The Day Care Programme functions from 9.30 in the morning till 4.00 in the evening. Six Developmental Educators handle a maximum of 72 children @ 12 children in a class.

Young adults with CP who complete the training at this centre are also being helped in getting into suitable job or vocation. The Persons with Disabilities residing in Trichy go for open employment whereas those hailing from the rural areas choose the option of starting self entrepreneurship ventures. They are helped in starting Petty Shop, maintaining Poultry Farm, rearing Milch Cow etc. An initial payment of upto Rs. 25,000 is being paid for a person starting a business venture.

We have been maintaining a shop, Delightful Shoppy through which we supply the needed Aids & Appliances for the benefit of children with disabilities. The benefits are as follows.
- We are able to buy the products that are useful and suitable for the children directly from the whole-sale dealer.
- We are able to make modifications in the product if it is needed.
- The products are being supplied to the children according to the specific needs & requirement of each and every individual.
Delightful Shoppy has turned out to be a special shop, supplying special items for children with special needs. We buy products at a total cost of Rs. 1,20,000 / per year which may include getting walkers, potty chairs, special education materials, puzzles, communication devices etc.
This particular shop is very useful for children coming from far off places who attend training programme under Home Management Programme.

The incidence and prevalence of children with disabilities are more in the rural areas. Again there has been a lack of facilities and services for these children. Considering these factors, we have started Rural Habilitation Centres at Musiri, Lalgudi, Thuraiyur and Manaparai. The cost of maintaining a centre stands at Rs. 3,13,000 per centre / annum.
